The Coin

This is an extremely rare sovereign in a condition seldom seen of the issue. Any example of this elusive issue is sought after and demands a large premium. This problem free, attractive and relatively high-grade example is one of the nicest seen for an issue so rare. When these coveted 1879 St George sovereigns do pop up, they are quickly snatched away into collections for sometimes decades at a time. An example with the same grade sold at auction in April of 2016 for £5,940 (inc. fees).

Although not mint state, the coin retains lustre and is a wholly pleasing sight for the eyes. There is some wear to the Queen’s hair and eyebrow, but not enough to detract hugely from the coin’s abundant eye appeal. The all-so-important reverse, where St. George proudly rears his horse above the woesome dragon, is even finer than the obverse.

In the context of the issue’s extreme rarity and desirability, this is a super example and quite the rare opportunity for collectors and investors alike.
