Emperor Commodus Augustus, born Lucius Aurelius Commodus in 161 AD, ruled from 180 to 192 AD. He was the son of Emperor Marcus Aurelius and succeeded him upon his death. Commodus was known for his extravagant and controversial behavior, which included engaging in gladiatorial combat and renaming Rome after himself. He was also known for his political and military incompetence, and his reign was marked by corruption and mismanagement. Commodus was assassinated in 192 AD, ending his tumultuous reign. Despite his flaws, Commodus remains a fascinating figure in Roman history, inspiring numerous works of literature and film, including the blockbuster movie "Gladiator."
