The Coin

In 1547, King Henry VIII (of the many wives) died and his son, Edward VI, became King at the age of just nine. The first coins of this boy King would be struck posthumously in the name of his father, hence why this stunning half-sovereign is technically a coin of Edward VI despite displaying the name of Henry VIII. Coins featuring the name of Henry VIII are some of the most popular in all of British numismatics owing to the rotund ruler’s infamy.

This is an exceptionally attractive example of the issue. The coin is evenly round and free of any edge issues or flan splits. It features choice surfaces of a subtle earthy tone and abundant lustre. In general, the issue is plagued with weakness of strike, and it is doubtful that a fully struck example exists. Fortunately, on this example the weakness of strike is confined to the lower portions of each design, leaving the faces of the coin’s three characters pleasingly full. It is a delight to see such a rare coin featuring such dazzling eye appeal.

The issue is described in North as rare. However, this is an understatement. There have been less than ten examples available at public auction in the last ten years and sourcing an example in any condition comes with extreme difficulty. Very rare is a more realistic description of this issue’s scarcity.
