The Coin

On the 14th of May 1855, The Sydney Mint – the first branch mint to produce sovereigns – started production. The first ever circulation, branch mint sovereigns are the 1855-SY sovereigns featuring new designs by cousins James and Leonard Charles Wyon. The present coin is one of these sought-after, first Australian sovereigns in a condition seldom seen of the very rare issue.

The obverse design features a somewhat daintier depiction of the Queen, which was used in circulation for just two years before being redesigned by Leonard Charles Wyon. The reverse was newly designed for the nascent Australian sovereign series. The delicate wreath in combination with the imposing crown and AUSTRALIA lettering would go on to be immortalised in the coveted, early Sydney sovereigns.

Described in Bentley as extremely rare and in Marsh a rare, the truth lies between these two assessments. This is a very rare and popular first issue sovereign of the Sydney mint, sure to be an impressive addition to any collection.
